Matt Thomas Adults and Young Persons Counsellor
Hi, I’m Matt (he/him), a BACP registered Humanistic Therapist. I offer face to face sessions in Brighton and Hove and also work online and via telephone. Experiencing difficult feelings and struggling emotionally at times is a natural part of life. I can support you with this by making problems feel lighter - I will help you explore difficult events and feelings and help you to understand them in a safe, non-judgemental space. I can also help you find practical, tangible solutions to help manage your life that may draw on existing skills and resilience. Issues around race and LGBTQIA+ and your experience of the world are particularly important to me.
Sometimes we perhaps need someone to talk to who is not a friend or family member. I will provide a safe space to do this, and will help you understand things better. Therapy can be like decluttering a messy cupboard, we will take everything out, tidy it up and put it back in better order. I believe our therapeutic relationship is important - you can expect me to be warm, honest and genuine.
After qualifying from the University of Brighton, I completed an Advanced Level 5 Qualification in Counselling Children and Young People. I recently completed a BACP and Open University Course: Working Therapeutically with trans (inc. non-binary people): What does good look like? I completed CPD on Working with Gender in Counselling in July 2025 and am currently working towards a qualification related to working with diagnosed eating disorders. I have previously worked for a South London Counselling Agency the NHS under Wandsworth Borough and volunteered at South London Young Persons Charity (Catch 22). Having worked in London for just under 3 years, I have worked with a broad variety of different people and issues. I am particularly interested in issues related to culture, LGBTQIA+ and identity, and how these play out in the context of life in the UK in 2026. I have experience of working with issues such as self-harm, suicidal thoughts, discrimination and identity, family and relationship problems, disordered eating, substance misuse, problems at school and at home, anxiety and general sadness. I also have a qualification in Understanding Substance Misuse which is an area of interest for me.
